Microplastics have been found in marine life, drinking water, and even human bodies. This crisis has even led to damage in the economy, such as in fisheries and tourism. Some researchers have found that if this problem is not addressed then the plastic crisis will grow to 29 metric tons per year by the year 2040, not accounting for microplastics. When taking microplastics into account, the cumulative amount of plastic in the ocean can reach 600 million tons by 2040.
